My Anger Signals
Helping kids notice anger before it gets too big
Anger starts out small and grows bigger and bigger if you do not catch it. When anger is small, you can still control it. When it gets really big, it is much harder to stop. Your body gives you clues that anger is growing. These clues are called anger signals. If you learn your signals, you can use them like a stop sign to slow down before anger takes over.
1
Small Anger
You are just a little bit upset. Maybe something annoyed you, but it does not feel like a big deal yet. You might notice a tiny knot in your stomach or a frown on your face.
2
Medium Anger
Your anger is growing. Your face might feel hot, your hands might squeeze tight, or your voice might get louder. This is the best time to use a calming skill.
3
Big Anger
Your anger feels really strong. You might want to yell, hit, cry, or break something. It is very hard to think clearly. Try to walk away and take deep breaths.
Common anger signals: my face feels hot, I start to shake, I raise my voice, I go quiet, my eyes get watery, I try to bother people, I cannot think straight, I feel annoyed, I want to hit something.
What are YOUR anger signals? The sooner you notice them, the easier it is to hit the brakes.
