The Masks We Wear

An expressive arts activity for exploring inner and outer selves

GeneralInfographicFree Resource

Masks are a powerful metaphor in therapy. The outside of a mask represents what we show the world: the roles we play, the emotions we display, and the image we project. The inside represents what we keep hidden: private feelings, fears, hopes, and parts of ourselves we are not ready to share. This expressive arts activity invites you to create a mask that explores the difference between your public self and your inner experience.

1
The Outside of the Mask
Decorate the front to represent what others see. Consider: What emotions do you show to the world? What roles do you play (e.g., caretaker, achiever, peacekeeper)? What do you want people to believe about you?
2
The Inside of the Mask
Decorate the back to represent your inner world. Consider: What feelings do you keep hidden? What fears or insecurities do you carry? What parts of yourself feel too vulnerable to share?
3
Reflection
After completing both sides, compare them. How different are your inner and outer selves? What would it feel like to let someone see the inside? Are there parts of your inner self you would like to express more openly?
Use any materials you like: markers, paint, collage, fabric, or found objects. There is no right or wrong way to create your mask.
This activity can bring up strong emotions. Go at your own pace, and share only what feels comfortable.
