Tracing the Messages That Shaped Your Body Image
Identifying and Evaluating External Influences
Throughout your life, you have absorbed countless messages about your body from the people and culture around you. Some messages were spoken directly, such as a compliment or a critical remark. Others were more subtle, communicated through images, social norms, or the unspoken attitudes of those close to you. Many of these messages were internalized without conscious evaluation. This exercise helps you identify the most influential body-related messages you have received, examine their sources, and decide whether they are worth keeping.
For each source category below, write the most significant messages you have received about your body or appearance. Then note whether each message has been helpful or harmful to your body image, and why. There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is awareness.
