Anxiety often stems from thoughts that overestimate danger and underestimate your ability to cope. Cognitive restructuring, a core technique in cognitive behavioral therapy, involves identifying these distorted thoughts and generating rational counterstatements based on evidence. With practice, this process becomes more automatic and reduces the intensity and frequency of anxious reactions.
When you notice anxiety rising, pause and identify the specific thought driving it. Write it in the first column. In the second column, note the cognitive distortion involved (such as catastrophizing, mind-reading, or fortune-telling). In the third column, craft a rational counterstatement based on evidence and past experience. In the final column, rate how much you believe the counterstatement from 0 to 100 percent.
