Setting Up a Reward-Based Behavior System

A Step-by-Step Guide to Token Economies for Children and Adolescents

Children & TeensExerciseFree Resource

A token economy is a structured behavior modification system in which a child earns tokens (such as stickers, points, or tally marks) for demonstrating target behaviors. Tokens are later exchanged for meaningful rewards. Decades of research in applied behavior analysis confirm the effectiveness of token economies for increasing prosocial behavior and decreasing challenging behavior in children and adolescents (Maggin et al., 2021). The key to success lies in careful design and consistent implementation.

Core Principles
  • Tokens are earned, never removed. Taking away tokens as punishment undermines the child's sense of accomplishment and can lead to frustration or disengagement. Once a token is earned, it belongs to the child permanently.
  • Behaviors must be clearly defined. Vague instructions like 'be good' or 'clean your room' leave too much room for misunderstanding. Specify observable, measurable actions such as 'place all dirty clothes in the hamper before bedtime.'
  • Keep the system simple. Focus on two or three target behaviors at a time. Complex systems with many rules are difficult for both parents and children to maintain consistently.
  • Follow through every time. If you promise a token, deliver it. If you promise a reward, provide it. Inconsistency erodes the child's trust in the system and reduces motivation.
  • Involve the child in planning. Children are more motivated by rewards they helped choose. Collaborate on the reward menu to ensure the incentives are genuinely appealing.

Step 1: Identify Target Behaviors

Select two or three specific behaviors you want to increase. Focus on what you want the child to do, rather than what you want them to stop doing. Frame behaviors positively and make them observable.

  1. 1
Write down two or three behaviors you want to see more often.
    • Use action words: 'Complete homework before dinner,' not 'Be responsible.'
    • Ensure the child can realistically perform the behavior.
  2. 2
Define each behavior so clearly that anyone could recognize it.
    • Instead of 'clean your room,' specify: 'Make the bed, put all toys in the bin, and place dirty clothes in the hamper.'
  3. 3
Discuss the target behaviors with your child to make sure they understand what is expected.

Step 2: Choose Tokens and a Tracking Method

Tokens should be simple, tangible, and easy to track. The format matters less than the consistency of awarding them.

  • Stickers on a chart work well for younger children (ages 3-7).
  • Tally marks, checkmarks, or points on a whiteboard suit older children and adolescents.
  • Digital tracking apps can work for tech-oriented families, but physical tokens are often more impactful for younger children because they are concrete and visible.
  • Place the tracking system somewhere visible, such as the refrigerator or a shared bulletin board, so the child can see their progress.

Step 3: Create a Reward Menu

Work with your child to create a menu of rewards at different price levels. Include small daily rewards, medium weekly rewards, and at least one larger reward they can save toward over time.

  1. 1
Brainstorm a list of potential rewards with your child.
    • Small rewards (1-3 tokens): extra screen time, choosing a snack, picking the family movie.
    • Medium rewards (5-10 tokens): a playdate, a trip to the park, staying up 30 minutes later.
    • Large rewards (15-25 tokens): a special outing, a new book or toy, a sleepover with a friend.
  2. 2
Set token prices that are achievable. A child who earns 2-3 tokens per day should be able to afford a small reward daily and a medium reward by the end of the week.
  3. 3
Write the reward menu on a poster or card and display it alongside the token chart.

Step 4: Implement Consistently

Consistency is the single most important factor in a token economy's success. Award tokens immediately after the behavior occurs, pair the token with specific verbal praise, and allow the child to redeem rewards as agreed.

  1. 1
Award the token as soon as the target behavior is completed.
    • Say exactly what the child did: 'You finished your homework before dinner. That earns a token.'
    • Avoid delayed rewards in the early stages; immediacy strengthens the behavior-reward connection.
  2. 2
Allow the child to exchange tokens for rewards whenever they have enough, without adding conditions.
  3. 3
Review the system with your child weekly. Celebrate progress and adjust target behaviors or rewards as needed.

Step 5: Fade the System Over Time

The ultimate goal is for the child to internalize the target behaviors so that external rewards are no longer necessary. Once behaviors are well established, gradually reduce the frequency of token delivery while maintaining verbal praise and encouragement.

  1. 1
After several weeks of consistent success, begin awarding tokens every other time instead of every time.
  2. 2
Shift emphasis from tokens to natural reinforcers: praise, acknowledgment, and the intrinsic satisfaction of the behavior.
  3. 3
If behavior regresses, temporarily return to the full token schedule before fading again more gradually.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
  • Removing tokens as punishment. This makes the child feel their effort was wasted and can trigger resentment or withdrawal.
  • Setting the bar too high. If rewards are too expensive or behaviors too difficult, the child will lose motivation. Start easy and increase expectations gradually.
  • Inconsistent implementation. If tokens are sometimes given and sometimes forgotten, the system loses credibility. Set reminders if needed.
  • Offering unrealistic rewards. Only promise what you can deliver. A broken promise will undermine the entire system.
  • Keeping the same system too long without updates. Refresh the reward menu periodically to maintain the child's interest.
