Family Connection Discovery Activity

A guided exercise for strengthening family awareness and communication

Anger ManagementExerciseFree Resource

Research in family systems therapy (Bavelas et al., 2022) shows that structured dialogue activities improve emotional attunement among family members. This exercise uses prediction-and-reveal questions to help families discover shared values, uncover blind spots, and practice empathic listening in a low-conflict format.

Facilitator Instructions

Give each family member their own answer sheet. Read each question aloud and ask everyone to write their own answer, plus their best guess for every other family member. After writing, invite each person to share. Use surprising similarities or differences as springboards for deeper discussion.

  1. 1
Distribute answer sheets. Have each person write the names of all other family members across the top of their sheet.
  2. 2
Read each question aloud. Allow one to two minutes for everyone to write their personal answer and their predictions for each family member.
  3. 3
Go around the group and have each person reveal their own answer first, then share the guesses they made about others.
  4. 4
Pause after each question to explore reactions. Ask follow-up prompts such as: 'Were you surprised by anyone's answer?' or 'What did that guess tell you about how you see each other?'

Warm-Up Questions

These light questions build safety and engagement before moving into deeper territory.

  1. 1
What is each person's favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
  2. 2
Who in the family is a morning person and who is a night person?
  3. 3
What is a hidden talent or skill each person has?
  4. 4
What is each person's proudest accomplishment so far?

Values and Identity Questions

These questions explore how family members see themselves and each other at a deeper level.

  1. 1
What is each person's most important life goal right now?
  2. 2
Assign one or more roles to each person: The Problem-Solver, The Nurturer, The Communicator, or The Quiet Strength.
  3. 3
If you could describe each person's future in one phrase, what would it be: World Traveler, Family-Centered, Career Achiever, or Adventure Seeker?

Emotional Awareness Questions

These questions build emotional literacy and help family members recognize each other's internal experiences.

  1. 1
What is a feeling each person might be holding back from sharing with the family?
  2. 2
How can you tell when each person is going through a difficult time? What are their visible cues?
  3. 3
Who does each person turn to first when they are upset or need support?
  4. 4
What is one thing each person wishes the rest of the family understood about them?
