Strengths and Savoring Reflection Prompts

Conversation starters designed to build positive emotions, gratitude, and connection

GeneralInfographicFree Resource

Positive psychology research (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000; Fredrickson, 2001; Schueller & Parks, 2012) shows that intentionally focusing on strengths, positive experiences, and social connections expands emotional resilience and improves well-being. These prompts are designed for use in individual reflection, group therapy, family conversations, or classroom settings. Each prompt targets a specific positive psychology construct such as gratitude, savoring, character strengths, prosocial behavior, or social connection.

1
Gratitude Recognition
Describe one thing that happened this week that you are genuinely thankful for. What made it meaningful, and who, if anyone, contributed to it?
2
Savoring a Positive Moment
Think of a moment in the past few days when you felt happy, calm, or content. Describe where you were, what you were doing, and what sensations or emotions you noticed.
3
Character Strength in Action
Identify a personal strength you used today, such as creativity, kindness, perseverance, or humor. How did using this strength affect your mood or the outcome of a situation?
4
Prosocial Behavior
Describe something kind you did for another person recently, or something kind that someone did for you. How did the exchange make both of you feel?
5
Overcoming a Challenge
Share a recent difficulty you navigated successfully. What skills or supports helped you get through it, and what did the experience teach you about yourself?
6
Connection and Belonging
Describe a recent moment of genuine connection with another person, whether a deep conversation, shared laughter, or simply feeling understood.
7
Noticing Beauty or Wonder
Think of something beautiful, interesting, or surprising you noticed recently. It might be something in nature, a piece of art, or an unexpected moment in your daily routine.
8
Future Self Visualization
Imagine your life one year from now, assuming things go as well as they reasonably can. What does a typical good day look like, and what values are you living out?
9
Pride and Accomplishment
Describe something you did recently that you can feel proud of, no matter how small. What effort did it require, and how did it feel to accomplish it?
10
Making Someone's Day Better
Think of a time this week when you brightened someone else's day. What did you do, and how did you know it had a positive impact?
Positive emotions are not a luxury. They broaden our thinking, build resilience, and strengthen social bonds.
The goal is not to ignore difficulties but to ensure that good moments receive the same attention we naturally give to struggles.
