Evaluating When Anger Becomes Harmful
A self-assessment for understanding anger's impact across life domains
Anger is a normal, adaptive emotion that signals boundary violations, injustice, or blocked goals. However, research shows that anger becomes problematic when it is too frequent, too intense, lasts too long, or leads to aggressive behavior (Kassinove & Tafrate, 2019). Problematic anger is associated with cardiovascular disease, weakened immune function, relationship deterioration, and impaired decision-making (Staicu & Cutov, 2010). This worksheet helps you evaluate whether your anger has crossed from healthy self-advocacy into territory that harms your well-being or relationships.
For each life domain below, rate how much anger has negatively affected that area (0 = not at all, 10 = severely). Then describe a specific example of how anger caused a problem in that domain.
