Reflect on How Your Emotional Responses Affect Your Relationships

DBTWorksheetFree Resource

The way you express emotions has a direct impact on your relationships. Research in emotion regulation (Gross & Ford, 2023) shows that people who reflect on their emotional expression patterns are better able to modulate their responses over time, leading to healthier interactions and stronger connections. This diary helps you track moments where your emotional expression created friction, understand the consequences, and plan more skillful alternatives.

Each time an emotion leads to tension in a relationship, record the situation below. Note the emotion, how you expressed it (words and actions), how the other person responded, and what you could do differently next time. Review your entries weekly to identify recurring patterns.
