Unsent Letter to a Relationship

A reflective writing exercise for processing unspoken feelings

RelationshipsWorksheetFree Resource

Sometimes the most important words in a relationship are the ones never spoken. Expressive writing research (Pennebaker & Smyth, 2016; Niles et al., 2024) shows that putting unresolved emotions into words can reduce psychological distress, improve emotional clarity, and support the process of meaning-making. Writing a letter you do not intend to send allows you to be fully honest without the complications of the other person's reaction. This exercise is especially useful when a relationship has ended, when a person is no longer accessible, or when direct communication feels too risky.

Use the sections below to prepare and then compose your letter. Begin by identifying what has been weighing on you, then write freely and honestly. Do not worry about grammar or structure. After writing, reflect on what the process brought up for you.
