Stress and Resilience Mapping Tool

Identifying stress sources and protective factors that shape relationship well-being

RelationshipsWorksheetFree Resource

Stress does not exist in a vacuum. Research on relational stress (Randall & Bodenmann, 2023) shows that the impact of any stressor depends on the balance between demands placed on an individual and the coping resources available to them. Chronic stress erodes relationship satisfaction, communication quality, and emotional intimacy, while protective factors such as social support, healthy coping, and daily positive experiences buffer these effects (Falconier et al., 2022). This worksheet helps you map both sides of the equation: the stressors weighing on you and the strengths that counterbalance them. Understanding this balance is the first step toward reducing stress spillover into your closest relationships.

In the table below, list your most significant stressors across three categories: daily hassles, major life transitions, and chronic life circumstances. Rate each stressor's intensity from 1 (mildly stressful) to 10 (extremely stressful). Then, in the protective factors section, identify daily uplifts, coping strategies, and stable strengths that help you manage stress. Be as specific as possible. Discuss your completed map with your partner, therapist, or support person to identify areas where additional resources or boundaries may be needed.
